Saying Goodbye to FF/EMT Jon Hickey

Several members of Station 31 attending the fun

On November 30, 2017, EMT/FF Jon Michael Hickey tragically lost his life.  Jon was a member of OMVFCo from 09/26/2011 - 01/30/2017.  Several members from OMVFCo attended his funeral on December 7th.

At the request of the Hickey family, Jon’s memorial service was recorded.  We understand that a lot of Jon’s friends and colleagues are in the fire department and may not have been able to attend his funeral due to work.

SANTA PLANNING TOUR OF OWINGS MILLS - STARTING DECEMBER 18th

Its December, and you know what that means?

SANTA

Our plan this year is to stop at common areas where large groups of people can gather to see Santa. We cannot make it to every street, this way we can give everybody an equal opportunity to see Santa by having our community come to him.

It's important to note that Santa cannot get down from the fire engine. His large belly makes it tough to get up and down. If needed, one of our firefighters can pass a message to him.

Let us know your there, flashlights and flashing porch lights helps.

There are some streets that we just can't get down easily. If your neighborhood is listed for that night and you hear sirens, try to get out to a larger road to see Santa. Especially for dead-end streets and tight courts.

If you have a special need for Santa to visit your home, please send us a private message and we will TRY to accommodate requests. Santa is pretty busy this time of year. We ask for a donation of your choice to the fire company to do this.

Sometimes we have to take Santa on emergency calls with us. If we can, we will get right back out after the call. If not, stay posted to Facebook for updates on makeup dates.

Don't forget that tree sales are still going on at the fire station. Stop down if you need a tree.

Santa clause will begin his visits around 6:00PM and he will finish around 8:30PM.

The streets listed are meant to give the general neighborhoods, and not be a full list. If we were on your street before, there is a good chance you'll see Santa again.

Thanksgiving is next week. Let's make it fire safe by sharing the following safety messages.

As you plan your Thanksgiving menu don’t forget about fire safety.

Did you know Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires? The number of home fires double on Thanksgiving. So, let’s add a pinch of fire safety to the menu.

Keep these safety tips in mind as you prepare your meal.

Turkey:

If you are roasting your turkey, make sure you set a timer. This way, you won’t forget about the bird as you watch the parade or football.

If you are frying your turkey:

  • Use a fryer with thermostat controls. This will ensure the oil does not become over heated.
  • Thaw your turkey completely. Ice on the bird will cause the oil to splatter.
  • Don’t overfill the pot with oil. If you do, the oil will overflow when you add the turkey causing a fire hazard.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the fryer.
  • Also, always use the fryer outdoors.

Stuffing and Potatoes:

Stand by your stove when you are boiling your potatoes or frying onions for stuffing. It is best to stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling or broiling. If you are in the kitchen, it is easier to catch spills or hazardous conditions before they become a fire.

Vegetables:

  • Keep the area around the stove clear of packaging, paper towels, and dish cloths; anything that can burn.
  • Be sure to clean up any spills as they happen.
  • Be prepared. Keep a large pan lid or baking sheet handy in case you need to smother a pan fire.
  • Turn pot handles towards the back of the stove so you don’t bump them.

By following these safety tips, you will have a delicious and fire safe Thanksgiving. Let the firefighters have dinner with their families, not yours.

UPDATE: Santa Claus Schedule

We wanted to keep everyone updated on Santa's schedule.  At the current time, we are down to one piece of fire apparatus.  Between running emergency calls, selling Christmas trees, and the weather, our volunteers are finding it challenging to tour all of Owings Mills with Santa on one fire engine.  We are doing our best to reach all of the areas in our given time frame.  We do not want to be out too late so that we don't wake up kids with our loud sirens.

We will keep you updated of any changes.  But, your best notification may just be listening for loud circling sirens in your neighborhood between 6pm-830pm.
